This dissertation focuses on Quevedo'a Silvas, a series of thirty-four poems modelled after Statius' Silvae. Its purpose is twofold: to offer both an overall characterization of the collection and a detailed examination and edition of selected individual poems. Thus, the first half of the dissertation concerns itself with the definition, identification and description of the Silvas as a series. Chapter I presents a comprehensive review of the extensive bibliography on Quevedo's poetry. Chapter II traces the classical antecedents of Quevedo's poems, chronicles the semantic evolution of the term silva, and concludes that Quevedo, like Statius, applied it to a composition of varied content without reference to its metrical form.
